In the 1990s, data protection was almost exclusively an IT-related field that was rarely handled by lawyers. Thilo Märtin has been working as a data protection consultant since 2004 and specialized in it as one of the first lawyers in 2006. Since then, data has taken on an increasingly significant legal role. The Federal Data Protection Act became legally more sophisticated, culminating in the introduction of the GDPR in 2018, which is fully interpretable only by lawyers.
